This forty-eight-hour advanced training course equips you to work for reconciliation with church groups that are handling conflict poorly. It builds upon skills and understanding learned in Bridge Builders foundation courses.
Considerable skill and experience are required to help others address their disagreements constructively. And when there are more than two or three people involved – such as a church leadership team, council or congregation – it is even more demanding to design and lead a suitable process. Intervening in Group Conflicts demonstrates the group intervention approach used by Bridge Builders. A whole-group role-play runs over the length of the course, to provide a direct experience of the processes being taught. An important goal is to develop familiarity with the broad range of skills needed.
If your previous training with Bridge Builders has helped you to develop some experience as a mediator, then this course could be an important next step for you.
The course includes presentations, group work and role-play. Active and practical in focus, the sessions emphasise hands-on skills training and the exploration of case studies brought by participants. Consideration is given to ways of adapting processes to fit different contexts and denominational structures. Each day includes times of prayer and worship. Because the course is intensive, you should not plan to bring other work with you.
Colin Moulds is Executive Director of Bridge Builders and has been providing training, mediation and consultancy services in both the workplace and churches since 2009. He has a wealth of experience and knowledge on leadership and management built from 23 years with the world’s largest mobile telecommunications provider.
Colin Patterson is Assistant Director of Bridge Builders, and an Anglican priest. He has worked as a training officer for the Diocese of Durham, is an experienced adult educator, and is author of the Grove booklet How to Learn Through Conflict and a contributor to 101 Great Ideas for Growing Healthy Churches.
Sandra Cobbin is an independent trainer and consultant. She works with business and church leaders on management and leadership skills, and is a regular associate trainer with Bridge Builders.
Meals and Accommodation
The course is residential, with provision of single-room accommodation and meals (breakfast, lunch and evening meal) from Tuesday lunchtime until Thursday lunch time, at Foxhill Conference Centre, Frodsham, Cheshire WA6 6XB.
Cost and Application
The standard cost for the course is £415. A special “early bird” discount of £40 is available if booking by 29 February 2016, giving a reduced price of £375. A training manual is included. Please note that the course is only open to those who have previously completed either the foundation course Skills Training for Mediation and Facilitation in the Church or the advanced course Mediating Interpersonal Conflicts. Some experience of inter-personal mediation is also needed. Precedence is given to applicants sponsored by their church or organisation, and who may use the training for its benefit, or to enhance their own ministry. If you are on a very low income, then please contact us to see whether a bursary may be available.
