Bridge Builders specialises in practically-focused training, grounded in the example and teaching of Jesus. This workshop is designed for anyone in church leadership, but is specially relevant to those in a position of overall oversight.
A way of understanding leadership
This workshop starts from the assumption that the essentials of healthy relationships are the same in all human groups. It draws upon two main ideas: Jesus as an example of individual behaviour, and Family Systems Theory as a way of understanding group behaviour.
Jesus identified with his own people, yet was distinct from them in ways that they found both exciting and disturbing. From his point of view, it must often have meant responding to complicated currents of emotion. It probably felt rather like navigating the waves of an emotional “sea”, without being overwhelmed or alarmed.
According to Family Systems Theory (developed by Murray Bowen), emotional currents are not chaotic. They have some predictable patterns; they ebb and flow. But one must be able to read signs and make wise choices, in the face of turbulence. It means acting from clear sense of personal identity …. as Jesus did.
Running from 9.30am to 4.30pm, the programme includes worship, presentation, personal reflection, group discussion and experiential exercises.
- Explore how patterns of behaviour in families and churches are similar
- Understand better the systems of emotional forces that are at work
- Discover tools for charting the triggers of anxiety in church life
- Practise managing your own reactive behaviour
- Reflect on Jesus as a model of non-anxious leadership
