Dear Bridge Builders friend,
It is with great sadness that I am writing to inform you that our Chair of Trustees, Chris Burch, died on Sunday, 6th November 2016.
Chris suffered an unexpected heart attack on Friday 4th November. Despite heart surgery the following day, he subsequently had a massive stroke, from which he did not recover. His family were with him when he died.
Chris was a good friend to many, a warm, larger-than-life character who had an infectious joy of life and endless enthusiasm to get things done. We will all remember his real passion for the work of Bridge Builders, whose ministry he held dear to his heart.
Chris’s association with Bridge Builders goes back a long way. He originally developed a deep commitment to seeing peace-making as at the heart of the gospel when he discovered the London Mennonite Centre, more than 30 years ago. He became friends with Alan and Eleanor Kreider, and was involved from the early days in the Anabaptist Theology Forum. His interest in practical peace-making took a new turn when he attended one of Bridge Builders’ early five-day training courses in mediation and facilitation skills. He then became active in the Bridge Builders’ Network, and joined the Advisory Group that supported the small staff team. As Bridge Builders prepared to become an independent charity in 2011, with the closure of the Mennonite Centre, this group assumed more management responsibility. Under Chris’ leadership, it became the initial body of trustees.
Chris served as Chair of Trustees from the inception of Bridge Builders Ministries. He led Bridge Builders Ministries through significant changes in organisation, including raising substantial funds to ensure a solid financial position. He was tireless in building support for Bridge Builders among others, and his passing leaves a big hole.
We entrust Chris into God’s loving embrace, and hold Roz, their children and their wider family in our prayers through this time of grief and mourning. Please join us in praying for them.
Grace and peace
